Beyond the Vase: 3 Creative Ways to Upcycle Your Workshop Blooms

Written by Blooming Blossoms

You’ve just spent a magical morning at our Silver Spring studio for a Fresh Flower workshop, or perhaps a stunning Designer’s Choice bouquet just arrived at your door in Bethesda. The flowers are at their peak, filling your home with color and scent.

But what happens when they start to fade? At Blooming Blossoms, we believe the beauty of a flower doesn't have to end when it wilts. To help you stay in that floral flow a little longer, we’ve put together three fun, beginner-friendly ways to upcycle your blooms into long-lasting treasures.

1. The Heirloom Press: Preserving Your Favorite Petals

Pressing flowers is the ultimate way to pause time. It’s perfect for saving a special bloom from an anniversary delivery or a flower you’re particularly proud of from one of our classes or arrangements.

The Book Method (Best for Ranunculus & Roses):

- Prep: For dense flowers like roses or ranunculus, slice the flower in half vertically with a craft knife or remove the bulky center petals so they lie flat.
- The Sandwich: Place your blooms face-down on absorbent paper (parchment or blotting paper works best). Avoid paper towels with textures, as the pattern can stamp onto your petals.
- The Weight: Close the book and stack several more heavy books on top. Leave them in a dry spot for 2–4 weeks.

Pro Tip: Change the paper after the first 24 hours to remove initial moisture and prevent browning.

2. The Spa Hack: Eucalyptus Shower Steamers

If your arrangement included eucalyptus or lavender (staples in our workshops!), don’t toss them. These greens are actually better when they're past their best.

- How to do it: Gather your eucalyptus stems, tie them with a bit of twine, and hang them from your shower head (just out of the direct water stream).
- Why it works: The steam from your shower releases the essential oils, turning your bathroom into a Silver Spring spa. It’s the perfect way to extend that Nurtured Bloom feeling into your daily routine.

3. Petal Confetti: Eco-Friendly Celebrations

Planning a summer party in Chevy Chase or a wedding in the DMV? Skip the plastic glitter and make your own biodegradable confetti using petals from your old bouquets.

The Oven Method:

- Preheat your oven to a low setting (around 200°F or 90°C).
- Pull petals from the stems—roses, delphinium, and hydrangeas make the best colors.
- Spread them in a single layer on a tray lined with parchment paper.
- Bake for 10–20 minutes, checking every few minutes until they feel papery and dry.

Storage: Keep your colorful confetti in an airtight jar in a dark place to preserve the vibrant hues until the big day.
